What should you do when a roller shutter is jammed?

Quick answer

If a roller shutter jams, stop operating it immediately and do not force the belt, crank or motor. Check only visible signs without opening the box: a tilted curtain, slat outside a guide, obstruction or unusual noise. Isolate power if the motor continues straining or becomes warm, then contact a specialist.

01

Safe first actions

Release the control, clear people and objects from the opening and avoid repeated cycles. On a motorised shutter, isolate the relevant circuit if the motor hums, strains or produces an unusual smell.

02

Observe without dismantling

Look for a tilted curtain, protruding slat, blocked guides or a shutter that stops at the same point. Note whether the fault occurs while opening, closing or in both directions.

03

What to avoid

Do not open a difficult box, pull the curtain or adjust a powered motor. Components may be heavy or under load, and improvised handling can worsen damage.

04

Electrical or mechanical fault

Complete silence may indicate supply, control or motor issues. An audible motor with no curtain movement may indicate a mechanical jam or failed connection. These clues guide diagnosis but do not replace it.

05

Prepare a repair request

Send an overall photo, images of both guides and, if safely accessible, the control. Location, control type, last successful movement and observed noises help BO Stores prepare the visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I repair a jammed shutter myself?

Limit action to visual checks and removing a clearly accessible obstruction. Avoid the box, motor and loaded curtain.

Should I switch off the power?

Yes if the motor hums, strains, becomes warm or smells unusual. Use the identified isolator for the relevant circuit.

Why is the curtain moving unevenly?

A hanger, slat, guide or winding issue may be involved. Stop movement before the curtain jams further.

Which photos are useful?

Photograph the full shutter, both guides, the jam point and control without dismantling anything or taking risks.
