Manual or motorised blind: which should you choose?

Quick answer

Manual control remains simple and suitable for a small, accessible opening used infrequently. Motorisation adds meaningful comfort for heavy blinds, large glazing, multiple units or frequent use. Mechanical condition, power supply, desired controls and power-cut operation should all be considered.

01

When manual control is enough

A belt or crank can be durable, understandable and economical on a light opening. It should be accessible and require reasonable effort. If it is already stiff, the mechanics should be checked first.

02

When motorisation changes daily use

On large openings or several blinds, a motor removes repetitive handling and makes group operation easier. It also helps where manual controls are difficult to reach.

03

Wired, radio and scheduling

Wired systems use a fixed connection to a wall control. Radio offers more flexibility for transmitters and central operation. Timers and sensors can supplement the system but do not replace sound mechanics.

04

Use automation with restraint

Useful automation follows a clear routine: shading before overheating, evening closure or group control. Avoid functions occupants will not use and retain a simple local control.

05

Questions to answer before choosing

How often is it operated, how much effort does it require, is control needed for one room or a floor, and is power accessible? These answers help BO Stores propose a proportionate solution.

Frequently asked questions

Can motorisation be added later?

Often yes, when the mechanics, shaft, box and power supply allow a reliable retrofit.

Is motorisation useful for one blind?

Yes when it is heavy, frequently used, inaccessible or important for solar control. Otherwise manual operation may remain sufficient.

Is a mobile app required?

No. A wall switch or radio transmitter may be enough. An app is useful only when central or remote control serves a real need.

What happens during a power cut?

This depends on the motor and installation and should be clarified before fitting, especially for an important opening.
